Accessibility Statement

Our commitment

We build products for the person at the end of the screen, and that includes this website. It should work whether you use a mouse, a keyboard, a switch, a screen reader, a magnifier or voice control, and whether you are on a new laptop or a mid range phone on a slow connection.

Before every release we put the mouse away and move through the key journeys with a keyboard alone. It is a small habit, and it catches more than any report.

Our target: WCAG 2.2 Level AA

The site is designed and built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, the standard most widely used around the world.

We have tested it ourselves, as described below. We have not yet had an independent audit, so until one is complete we describe the site as aiming for, rather than certified at, WCAG 2.2 AA. When an audit is done, we will publish what it found here.

Motion, and how to turn it down

This site uses motion to tell its story: a 3D ampersand on the home page, smooth scrolling on desktop, words that light up as you read, numbers that count up and gentle parallax. We know motion can cause discomfort, dizziness or distraction, so the site respects the reduce motion setting on your device.

When reduce motion is switched on:

the 3D ampersand is switched off and the home page hero stays still;
smooth scrolling is switched off, so the page scrolls exactly as your browser normally does;
parallax stops, and headings, statements and numbers appear in full straight away;
the menu opens and closes without animation.

To switch on reduce motion:

Windows: Settings, then Accessibility, then Visual effects, and turn off Animation effects.
macOS: System Settings, then Accessibility, then Display, and turn on Reduce motion.
iPhone and iPad: Settings, then Accessibility, then Motion, and turn on Reduce Motion.
Android: Settings, then Accessibility, and turn on Remove animations (the exact wording varies by phone).

Smooth scrolling also switches itself off on touch screens, and the 3D ampersand loads only on devices that can run it comfortably. It is decorative and carries no information, so nothing is lost without it.

Using the site with a keyboard

Moving around

Press Tab on any page and the first thing you reach is a Skip to content link, which jumps straight past the header. Every link, button and form control can be reached with Tab and Shift + Tab, and a clear focus outline shows where you are.

The menu button in the header opens with Enter or Space. Focus moves into the menu, and Tab stays inside it while it is open, so you never lose your place behind it. Press Escape or the close button to close it, and focus returns to the button you started from.

The project brief

The project brief is a short form in five steps, and all of it works from the keyboard:

each step is a group of related questions with a clear label;
the options are real checkboxes and radio buttons, so Space selects them and the arrow keys move between radio choices;
Continue and Back move between steps, and progress is announced to screen readers;
if something needs another look, the message sits next to the field and focus moves to the first field that needs attention;
when your brief is sent, focus moves to the confirmation, which includes your reference number.

If JavaScript is switched off or fails to load, the brief still works as a single page form.

What else we have built in

A logical heading structure and page landmarks, so screen readers can list and jump between sections.
Text alternatives for images that carry meaning, and decorative images hidden from assistive technology.
Text and background colours chosen to meet AA contrast, in both light and dark sections.
Layouts that reflow at up to 400% zoom and respect your browser’s text size settings.
Links that open in a new tab are marked, and link text makes sense on its own.
Core content that reads without JavaScript.

How we test

Every key page is checked automatically against WCAG 2.2 AA rules with axe as part of our release tests, with reduce motion switched on. Automated tools catch only part of the picture, so we also test by hand: keyboard only journeys, focus order, zoom and text resizing, reduced motion, small screens, and screen reader checks with NVDA on Windows, VoiceOver on iPhone and TalkBack on Android.

Known limitations

We would rather tell you than let you find out:

Screenshots in case studies. Some case studies show screenshots of websites and apps we built for clients. Each has a description, but text inside a screenshot is not reproduced word for word. If you need more detail, ask and we will describe it.
Third-party services. WhatsApp, email apps, a calendar booking page and, if switched on, Cloudflare’s Turnstile check are run by other companies. We choose them with care, but their accessibility is outside our control.
Older archive projects. Pages in our work archive describe projects from earlier years, and some of the original sites no longer exist in their first form. The archive pages themselves meet the same standard as the rest of the site.
